🕯 鹿児島県立博物館 × らっそくや：伝統と自然を灯す絵蝋燭

 

鹿児島県立博物館では、木蝋に関する展示の一環として、和蝋燭の美しさと伝統を伝えるための絵蝋燭を展示されています。この度、その展示用として、手燭型の和蝋燭への絵付けをご依頼いただきました。

和蝋燭本体は、老舗の和蝋燭店である（有）松本商店様に製作していただき、私はその蝋燭に、和蝋燭特有の碇型がより美しく見えるよう、イチョウの葉をモチーフに絵付けを施しました。イチョウの葉は、秋の訪れを感じさせる日本の風景の一部であり、その美しさを和蝋燭の灯りとともに表現したいと考えました。

（後になって、和蝋燭の原料であるハゼの木を描くのも良かったかもしれないと感じましたが、それもまた次の作品への学びとなりました。）

Illuminating Tradition and Nature with Hand-Painted Japanese Candles

Hello, this is ico from rassokuya.

Today, I’m honored to share a special project created for the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum, as part of their exhibition on mokurou (wood wax)—a traditional material used in Japanese candle-making.

For this exhibit, I was asked to hand-paint a traditional Japanese candle (warōsoku) in the shape of a teshoku (handheld candle stand).

The candle itself was crafted by the long-established candle maker Matsumoto Shoten, a company with over 100 years of history in traditional wax craftsmanship.

To complement the unique anchor shape of the candle—one of the visual features of warōsoku—I chose to paint ginkgo leaves, a motif that quietly embodies the arrival of autumn in Japan. Under the soft glow of the candlelight, I hoped to create a sense of stillness and natural beauty through these golden leaves.

(After completing the work, I thought, perhaps I should have painted the hazenoki (Japanese wax tree), the actual raw material of these candles… A reflection that I’ll carry forward to inspire future creations.)
